The Canada Greener Homes Loan helped many Okanagan homeowners go solar. It offered up to $40,000, interest-free over 10 years, and many Roost Solar customers paired it with BC Hydro rebates. That program is now closed: Natural Resources Canada reports that its funding is fully committed and new loan applications can no longer be approved. The Canada Greener Homes Grant also closed to new applicants in 2024.

If you already have an approved loan, your funding remains available. If you are starting now, here is what can still help you pay for solar in BC.

BC Hydro solar and battery rebates

BC Hydro customers can get a rebate of $1,000 per kW of installed solar, up to $5,000 for a residential home, capped at 50% of the installed cost. Commercial and multi-unit residential buildings can receive up to $10,000.

Battery storage installed with solar qualifies for $500 per kWh, up to $1,500 for a home. If you enrol the battery in BC Hydro's Peak Saver program, the residential maximum rises to $5,000.

To qualify, your system must be designed and installed by a member of BC Hydro's Home Performance Contractor Network, and your self-generation application must be accepted before installation. Roost Solar is a network member and helps you through the application.

FortisBC electric customers are not eligible for BC Hydro's rebates, but FortisBC still offers net metering, which banks the power you export for use later. In BC Hydro territory, net metering closed to new customers on July 1, 2026, and new systems now go on BC Hydro's self-generation rate.

Financing through Vancity

For homeowners who want to spread out the cost, Vancity's Planet-Wise Home Renovation Loan can be used for solar. Once you have settled on a system design with Roost, you book an appointment with Vancity and their lending team walks you through the options:

  • Term loans from $3,500 to $50,000, paid over up to 15 years
  • A creditline from $5,000
  • A creditline mortgage (HELOC) from $25,000, up to 65% of your home's equity

Rates and approval depend on your situation, so confirm current terms with Vancity. We also work with Financeit as another financing option.

For businesses and farms

Commercial properties may qualify for the federal 30% Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit, alongside BC Hydro's commercial rebates of up to $10,000 for solar and up to $10,000 for battery storage.

What this means for your payback

Without a 0% loan, the cost of financing becomes part of the payback math. Rebates still lower the upfront price, and a well-designed grid-tied system keeps reducing your electricity bill for 25 years or more. Every Roost estimate shows you the numbers for your home, with and without financing.
